 Dear AAL,
I'm one of those lolitas that go to local anime conventions. In light of recent dramas, I've learned a lot. I've never been part of dramas, but I know girls, some even personally, who've been attacked.
To get to the point, I want to host a panel at my local convention in the future to discuss what to do when you're a target of drama. I would list things like how to avoid being targeted, what to do if you're targeted, how to make peace, tips and advice, etc.
I want to know if 1) this is feasible, 2) would anyone attend, and 3) other tips and advice.
Thanks in advance.

I recently attended AX where there was a panel, similar to your idea, called " Self Defense for the Otaku". It was basicly a little seminar of how to protect your hobby and what to do when you/ your hobby is attacked.

It was a useful panel for those who didn't know 'how to' or were unsure of what exactly fell into the category of said 'attacks'. The panel was small, but had some good information on this.

In retrospect, I do think it is helpful for those very new to their hobby/lifestyle/ what-have-you. But, it should try to stretch beyond the basics. What about the after effects? The list goes on.

I do like what you've posed above as the main idea, but for it to feasible to the audience at large, I can't really say.

Advice, I would think it would be like any other. Avoid cliques, don't discuss things you have no indepth knowledge of, avoid common misconceptions, and, as I'm sure you've heard on countless occassions, do your OWN research. There's no sure way to avoid becoming a target, though there are ways of minimizing the chances of being one.

Give the panel a try, by all means. But, don't expect a large turn out.

I think it might be a better idea to do something like a general beginner lolita help & advice panel, and include dealing with drama as part of the panel... or widen it the other way and just make it a panel on dealing with online drama in general, for otakus and other geeks. It just seems like a focus on lolita drama is very specific and might not attract very many attendees. It might also be a good idea to post a condensed version of the panel advice somewhere online, so that other lolitas who aren't in your area have access to the advice.

I think the idea itself is helpful, it's just a matter of working out how best to get that information to a larger audience, especially to the people who might not realize that they'll need it. : )
